VELscope Oral Cancer Screening

The benefit of coming into our office and receiving a full, comprehensive exam is that we will check your neck and oral tissues for lumps, red and/or white patches, and recurring sore areas of your mouth and gums.

This kind of early screening is highly beneficial because we can detect oral cancer at early stages, when it can still be treated.

Some of the habits that can increase the risk of cancer include smoking and heavy alcohol consumption (30 drinks a week or more). The combination of those two habits is estimated to be the trigger for 75% of the diagnosed oral cancers in this country. Of course, there are other lifestyle and environmental conditions that can contribute to your risk of developing oral cancer.

We advise all of our patients to schedule and attend regular dental appointments so that we can detect oral cancer in its earliest stages. As part of your regular exams and cleanings we will look for any tissue abnormalities inside of your mouth. In our dental practice, we do not limit our focus to just a single tooth at a time, we are concerned with your over all oral health.

For all of our patients, VELscope is a state-of-the-art assessment tool for discovering oral health problems, including oral cancer. VELscope is capable of detecting abnormalities not seen with the naked eye, thus greatly improving early detection. By implementing a VELscope scan of your oral tissue as a part of the routine of your regular scheduled dental appointment, we can stay on top of any developed abnormalities in your mouth.

Studies show that when oral cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate is as high as 80% to 85%. Adversely, when found in later stages, oral cancer’s five-year survival rate is only about 30%. By scheduling regular dental appointment with us, and by taking advantage of the VELscope technology we use to detect any abnormalities, you can stop oral cancer before it becomes fatal.
